What is Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure in which the internal structure of a joint is examined for diagnosis and treatment with the help of tube-like viewing instrument which is called as an arthroscope. Arthroscopy technique involves inserting of the arthroscope which is a small tube that has optical fibers and lenses attached to it. The arthroscope is inserted through tiny incisions made in the skin where the joint is to be examined. The arthroscope is connected to a video camera which shows the interior of the joint on the monitor. If procedures are performed with an addition to examining the joint with the help of arthroscope then it is called as arthroscopic surgery.

What Is Arthroscopic Knee Surgery?
Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique which is used to diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint. To perform this surgery the surgeon makes a small incision and then inserts a tiny camera in the knee. This provides the surgeon with a clear inner view of joint. With this surgery, the surgeon can investigate the exact problem in the knee and correct the issue or problem using small instruments within the arthroscope.

Arthroscopy also diagnoses several knee problems such as a misaligned patella and torn meniscus. Arthroscopy is also used to repair the ligaments of the joints. This technique has limited risks and the recovery period depends on the severity of the knee problem and the complexity of the required procedure.

Who Needs Knee Arthroscopy?
Knee arthroscopy is recommended to patients who are experiencing pain in the knees. The surgeons perform this surgery to confirm the source of knee pain and treat the problem accordingly. Arthroscopic surgery can diagnose and treat the following knee injuries:-

  • Patella that’s out of position.
  • Removal of a Baker’s cyst.
  • Torn anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments.
  • Fractures in the knee bones
  • Torn meniscus.
  • Pieces of torn cartilage that are loose in the joint.
  • Swollen synovium.

Preparing For Knee Arthroscopy
The surgeons advise the patient to stop taking medicines such as ibuprofen or aspirin for weeks or days before the procedure. The patients are refrain from drinking or eating 6 to 12 hours before the surgery. In such case, pain medicines are given to patients after the surgery to manage the pain.

What Happens During a Knee Arthroscopy?
Knee Arthroscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a few small incision in the knees and pumps sterile salt water into it to expand the knees. This makes it easy for the surgeon to see inside the knee joint clearly. The surgeon then inserts arthroscope which has a camera attached to it. The surgeon can see the images produced by the camera on the monitor in the operating room and perform the procedure accordingly. If the surgeon locates the problem in the knees they may insert a small into the incision to correct the problem. After surgery, the surgeon drains the saline from the joint and closes the incision with the stitches.

Risks
Following are some of the risks associated with knee arthroscopy:-

  • Stiffness in the knee.
  • Infection at the site of the surgery.
  • Injury or damage to the nerves, cartilage, blood vessels and ligaments.
  • Pain even after the surgery.
  • Allergic reaction to anaesthesia.
  • Bleeding inside the knee joint.
