Nigerian Bottling Company Limited Sponsors 2016 Fct Spelling Bee Competition

In demonstration of its support for educational development in the Nigeria, non-alcoholic beverage giant, Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC) sponsored the 2016 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Spelling Bee Competition in Abuja.

The event which took place on June 18, 2016 is aimed at increasing the knowledge impact on lives of the participants, their schools and families. Representatives of schools in the 13 Local Government Areas in Abuja were in attendance, along side teacher and parents of the participating students.

Speaking at the event, the Legal Public Affairs and Communications Director, Sade Morgan, said, “Development in education is a task for all stakeholders and NBC’s sponsorship of the Spelling Bee Competition will drive academic excellence and sustain learning and development of the Nigerian child. The event will go a long way in supporting and motivating pupils towards academic excellence, instilling a sense of pride and confidence in participants.

Also speaking at the event was the Former Minister of Education and Vice-President, Africa Division of World Bank, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, who described the participants as ‘Spelling Champs’, encouraged them to chellenge the status quo, set new records, and strive for excellence at all times. She stated further that, a strong commitment to studying and growth is always rewarded with success.

The FCT Spelling Bee was launched by Decipher Solutions as an annual community development service project in 2013. The Competition is a literacy program to teach students the effective pronunciation of words, their meaning and proper context of usage in English Language. The FCT Spelling Bee creates a platform for students from diverse backgrounds including public and private schools to engage and compete fairly in order to emerge as winners of the competition.

Other NBC initiatives to ensure sustainability in education include, intellectual capacity development for teachers, Back to School program that provides school kits and educational materials for children at the trun of every academic session as well as Infrastructure development and renovation in public primary schools. NBC would continue to drive initiatives that would support delivery of qualitative education amongst Nigerian children as a bedrock for sustainable growth and economic development.
