SON Quarantines Tonnes Of Sub Standard Iron Rods In Yola

The Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) has quarantined tones of sub standard iron rods in a bid to rid out Nigeria from building collapse cases.

Mr. Dauda Yakubu, the North East Regional Coordinator of the organization confirmed the development shortly after carried out “Operation Free Nigeria “out of sub standard iron rods and other building materials in Yola on Thursday.

Yakubu said that the exercise was to arrest issues of using sub standard iron rods following the rampart cases of building collapses been experiences across the country.

“Today, the Standard Organization of Nigeria is conducting national exercise on iron rods sub standard.

“The exercise is aimed to rid out Nigeria from constant cases of building collapses.

“During the raid, a considerable tonnes of iron rods was quarantined in Yola.” Yakubu said.

According to the regional Coordinator, during the exercise the organization uncover sharp practices from the iron rods industries especially in the area of the thickness of the iron rod.

He explained that among the sharp practices uncovered was on top of the iron rod “written 25 Millimetre but after measurement we discovered it is 21 millimetre.’ He said.

He said that samples of the iron rods were collected and would be sent to Enugu engineering Laboratory for mechanical and chemical test for final ruling.

He said that anybody or company found in the sharp practice would be charged accordingly.

He advised the general public to always ensure the right quality and satisfied iron rods were used in building projects.
