SAN FRANCISCO, May 04, (THEWILL) – The Nigerian Senate has moved to enact a law that would prescribe death penalty for kidnappers.

The Senators, on Wednesday, expressed disgust that kidnapping and hostage-taking were becoming a nationwide problem.

This followed the submission of the report of the Joint Committee on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence on the recurrence of kidnapping and hostage-taking in Nigeria.

Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), who spoke extensively against kidnapping proposed that the National Assembly should enact a law prescribing death penalty for kidnappers.

The proposal was promptly seconded by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West).

When Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, put the matter to vote, the Senators voted unanimously in support of the proposal.
