Army arrests suspected killers of Gen. Shuwa

The 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Kano, on Monday paraded two suspected Boko Haram members believed to have masterminded the killing of Gen. Mamman Shuwa (retd.) in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The late Shuwa was murdered in his hometown, Maiduguri, on November 2, 2012.

Parading the suspects at the brigade's headquarters in Kano, the Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. H. Hassan, said that following sustained intelligence operation, the two suspects were eventually arrested in the Hotoro quarters of Kano metropolis.

According to him, the two suspected Boko Haram members were separately arrested on April 30, 2016 and May 1, 2016 in the Hotoro quarters by troops of the Nigerian army.

Hassan explained that Ali Mohammed a.k.a (Amir), 25, was a staunch supporter of the late leader of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammadu Yusuf.

Hassan said Mohammed preached the sect's doctrine in Baga, Borno State, and was reported to have led his followers to reinforce Boko Haram fighters during their battle with security agencies in 2009.

He added that it was during the clash that Yusuf died.

Hassan said that preliminary investigations revealed that the other suspect, Mohammed Sani Nafiu, 35, aided the terrorists, who killed the late Gen. Shuwa.

Among items recovered from Mohammed included a Volkswagen Golf car with registration number, Delta GWK 775 PP, one mobile phone and a sum of money.

The troops also recovered a mobile phone and a sum of money from Nafiu.

Hassan said that the suspects 'are now assisting our investigative team to ascertain their real statuses in the Boko Haram terrorist organisation.'

''I want to use this medium to restate the stance of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in ridding Nigerian territories of Boko Haram terrorists.

''I am also warning fleeing terrorists that the soldiers of the Nigerian Armed Forces are not relenting in the effort to crush them. I thank the Nigerian public for their support in the fight against terrorism.'' Punch
