Minister for Africa condemns violence in The Gambia

By United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office

Commenting on The Gambian Government's response to electoral reform protests, Minister for Africa James Duddridge said:

I am deeply concerned over allegations of excessive violence and ill treatment of those in custody following peaceful demonstrations in The Gambia.

The United Kingdom calls on The Gambian authorities to investigate these claims in a thorough and transparent manner, ensuring that anyone responsible for any wrongdoing is held accountable and brought to justice.

Those in custody should either be charged or released immediately and be treated in accordance with internationally acceptable human rights standards.
