BEVERLY HILLS, April 15, (THEWILL) – Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, have attacked the convoy of Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, on Wednesday night along Aba-Owerri Road in Aba area of the state.

The incident happened at about 8pm, on Wednesday night, near Immaculate Junction, along the popular Aba-Owerri Road, while the Governor was returning to Umuahia, after the day’s activities.

According to sources, the Governor with his security convoy ran into the robbers, who were robbing a Lagos bound bus, and fired sporadic shots, which scared the robbers away

On sighting the security vehicle, the gunmen also opened fire, without knowing that it was the Governor's convoy until they eventually scampered for safety.

Reports indicate that the Governor was returning from work without the usual siren and the revolving amber light and was mistaken for a miltary officer.

The incident has been confirmed by the Spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, DSP Ezekiel Onyeke.
