Yola FMC Commence Upgrading Of Facilities To Ensure Quality Service For Patients

The Chief Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Yola, Prof Mohammed Auwal has said that the centre has commenced upgrading of its facilities for improve service to patients.

Auwal made this known when the newly elected executives of Adamawa state Correspondents' Chapel paid him a familiarization visit.

He said the centre has opened a new Accident and Emergency unit, Intensive Care Unit and operation theaters among others.

Mohammad also said the centre was preparing to commence Post Graduate Residency training for doctors which was expected to commenced before the end of this year.

"By the grace of God before the end of this year, we will be able to start post graduate residency training.

"That means we can train specialist here; we are now trying to upgrade some facilities.", Auwal.

According to him the move to upgrade the centre to a status of Teaching Hospital was still on course, adding that the political will was there as lawmakers from the zone were making effort in that direction.

Auwal said the centre was also in touch with Adamawa government to secure additional land for expansion.

"The state government has been very helpful and cooperative about this upgrading." Auwal said.

He explained that the hospital which has 250 bed capacity was meant to serve as referral centre but people were trooping there and over stretching its facilities in view of the almost total breakdown of services at the primary and secondary health sectors.

He said that there was always long queues at the surgical section while accident and emergency unit was always full.

"With the population we are having we need to expand to about 500 bed capacity", Auwal said.

Commenting on the Paupers Fund Programme initiated by the hospital, Auwal said the fund which is meant to cater for the underprivileged in the society who could not pay their medical bill has became a success story.

Auwal said the fund which is being manage by responsible members of the society mostly retired civil servant has attracted contributions from the public.

He lauded the media for it role in enlightenment and mobilizing support for the fund which he said would greatly help the needy in the society access treatment in the hospital.
