By United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS)

4 April marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action. This day aims toraise awareness about landmines and the progress toward their eradication, and is a day that reminds usof the devastating effects of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW).

UNMAS South Sudan, in partnership with the South Sudan National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), willtake part in a worldwide campaign to bring attention to mine action by holding a large awareness-raisingevent at the Nyakuron Centre in Juba on 4 April, as well as smaller events in towns across South Sudan.

The theme for the commemoration is: Mine Action is Humanitarian Action, which will feed into theSecretary-General's “agenda for humanity” to be set at the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit in May2016. Linking mine action with humanitarian action promotes the lifesaving elements of mine action workand the enabling role it plays for other humanitarian interventions.
