…And Describes it as Unfortunate

Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, All Progressives Congress(APC) candidate in the Rivers South East Senatorial District re-run election has called on law enforcement agents to investigate the attitude of Kenneth Kobani and other PDP leaders in Gokana Local Government Area, who used armed youths to disrupt the distribution of electoral materials to the various polling units in the area.

Speaking with newsmen at Bera in Gokana Local Government Area on Saturday, Abe said that lack of prosecution of offenders was responsible for flouting electoral laws and called on the federal government to set up an inquiry on the matter.

"In the last election that preceded this rerun, the same atmosphere of violence and threat were perpetuated, people were killed and nothing was done. So, in an atmosphere where people do things and there is no consequence, there is really no need for them to stop what they are doing because what they are doing enable them to get the result that they desire. There is no reason for this people to stop their acts of violence and impunity”, he said.

According to Abe, a situation where the state government through Kenneth Kobani armed the youths who attacked the INEC office and chased away electoral officials and voters was unfortunate.

"I want to say that this is really unfortunate and that all politicians should have respect for the lives of our people. A situation whereby armed youths could shoot to chase out electoral officers, it is most unfortunate”.

Abe said to have a non violence posture does not make one weak in anyway but it was a decision which was done based on personal conviction, pointing out that he would not be provoked to go against this principle.

“And I keep saying this (non-violence) as if I am the only person who is talking. Because we have committed ourselves on principles to this country that we will make this society better than what we inherited from our fore fathers, we refused to do certain things. It does not mean that we are afraid of anything but we like to do things rightly”, he said.
