Woman dies as another Lagos building collapses

Tragedy occurred again in Lagos, yesterday, when a building at No 9, Alli Close, Mile 12, partially collapsed and killed a 47-year-old woman, while many other residents sustained injuries.

This came barely two weeks after a five-storey building collapsed at Lekki Gardens, Okusenla Road, Ikate - Elegushi, in Eti-Osa Local Government of the state, killing 34 persons.

The woman, in the Mile 12 incident, was said to have died on her way to hospital, following the injuries she sustained. According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred at about 8.45 a.m.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the building had shown signs of distress as some portions of the balcony had caved in, but the residents refused to vacate.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Mr. Micheal Akindele, while confirming the incident, said investigation would be conducted to determine the immediate and remote cause(s) of the collapse.

He said preliminary investigation confirmed the death of the woman, and no other casualty. According to him, the residents of the18-room-building had been evacuated and the site cordoned off.

Meanwhile, the property owner, it was gathered, had been invited to the state Secretariat, Alausa, for questioning.
