Iyc Applauds Media’s Role In Ese’s Rescue, Insists On Prosecution Of Culprits

BEVERLY HILLS, March 01, (THEWILL) – The Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Worldwide has commended the role of the country's media in rescuing Ese Oruru from the hands of her abductors, stressing that the media has demonstrated to the world the crucial role it plays in national development.

It however condemned the purported poor response by the Nigeria Police to the kidnap of the 14-year old, noting that the girl would have been released long ago had the police been alive to its responsibility.

The umbrella body for the Ijaw youths disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesman, Eric Omare, where it insisted that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase, must bring those who masterminded the kidnap of Ese, including officials of the Emir Palace, Kano, to justice, in line with the Anti-kidnapping law of Bayelsa State.

According to Omare, “This is the only way we can put a stop to such criminal conduct, especially considering the worrying activities of Fulani herdsmen in different parts of the country.

“We also frown on the cowardly statement credited to the IGP before the release of Ese that her release was delayed because of the absence of the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

“The IGP must note that nobody is above the law and that he is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

There had been a recent upsurge in public outcry over the alleged abduction of the 14-year-old Ese by one Yunusa, alias Yellow, in August 2015, who took her to Kano, converted her to Islam and forcefully married her without her parents' consent.
