Kano Dry Port to become operational soon

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has hinted that the proposed Kano Inland Dry Port would become operational soon.

The minister stated this in Kano during an assessment tour to the project site at Zawaciki, Kumbotso local government.

The minister Represented by an Assistant Director in the Federal Ministry, Mrs. May Ozonweke, the minister said a memo has been raised for its approval as a port of origin and destination.

She said they were in Kano to assess the level of preparedness for the take-off of the project.

We promise to report what we have seen here to the minister and within time get back to the concessionaire on its declaration as a port of origin and destination, Ozonweke said.

She added that the federal government was interested in the actualization of the project given the economic status of the state and its importance in government effort to diversify Nigeria’s economy.

When operational this project will improve the internal revenue of Kano state, it will also create job opportunity, she said.

The Chairman, Dala Inland Dry Port Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Ahmad Rabiu said the project started in 2002 and though the federal government was satisfied with their level of preparedness for the take-off of the project in 2006 it was not declared a port of origin and destination.

He said This is the only thing our bankers and foreign technical partners are waiting for. We are ready to take off, if government gives us the go ahead by declaring it a port of origin and destination within six months everything will run smoothly here.

The Magajin Rafin Kano, Alhaji Shehu Muhammed Dankadai who represented the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, said the emir was very happy over the project and was ready to give it all the necessary support.
