BE DEDICATED AND COMMITTED TO CLEAN AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT- Amina Mohammed

The Federal Government is committed to protecting and providing clean and safe environment particularly now the Lassa fever, Zika virus, Ebola and other diseases are threatening human existence.

The Honourable Minister of Environment Mrs Amina Mohammed stated this while signing the 2016 Environmental Health Officers Registrations Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) Practice Regulations, in Abuja.

Mrs Amina Mohammed noted that there are some defects in the 2007 EHORECON practice regulations which have hindered the Agency from functioning effectively, hence this 2016 Practice Regulations.

She said that her vision and that of the Hon. Minister of State for Environment Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibril is to ensure clean, safe and green Nigeria while their Administration will collaborate with all stakeholders of environment in order to achieve their desired goals.

The Hon. Minister promised to increase the workforce and human capacity building necessary for proper monitoring and supervision of the environment in line with the present Administration change mantra.

Mrs Amina Mohammed pointed out that protection, provision and keeping healthy environment cannot be achieved and sustained by the government alone but in collaboration with everybody including the National and state Assemblies, state and local Governments, communities, National orientation Agency and media.

She stressed that concerted efforts by the stakeholders in maintaining a healthy environment will inculcate in Nigerians the spirit and culture of self-daily sanitation exercise in their various homes, offices and business areas.

According to the Minister, “my vision and that of the minister of state is to ensure clean, safe and green Nigeria while our Administration will collaborate with all stakeholders on environment to achieve the desired goals”.

To this end, Mrs Amina Mohammed, charged the Agency to be dedicated and committed to clean and safe environment so as to eliminate killer diseases such as the Lassa fever, Zika virus, Ebola and others ravaging the global human lives.

Consequently, the Minister enjoined Nigerians and stakeholders to support the government in maintaining clean, safe, green and healthy environment in order to reduce the devastating effect of diseases and climate change in the ecosystem.

Earlier, the Registrar, EHORECON, Mr. Dominic Abonyi assured the Ministers of Environment that the signing of the 2016 EHORECON Practice Regulations will spur the Agency to achieving the environmental health standards of the present Administration change mantra.

Mr. Dominic Abonyi appealed for increase in workforce and funding in order to enable the Agency to achieve its target goals of healthy environment in the country.

The Registrar further explained that the increase in the staff strength and adequate training of the officers will ensure that sanitary officers are in all the nooks and crannies of the country for proper monitoring and supervision of our environment.
