Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Alpha Condé, the President the Republic of Guinea

The Secretary-General met on Sunday with H.E. Mr. Alpha Condé, President of the Republic of Guinea.

The Secretary-General commended the President on the appointment of a new Government in January and his decision to hand key ministerial portfolios to women. He assured President Condé that the United Nations would continue to accompany national stakeholders in the implementation of the political agreement of 20 August 2015. In this regard, the Secretary-General welcomed the declaration of the Government of Guinea that local elections would be held by 30 June 2016. The Secretary-General stressed that his Special Representative for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, intended to continue to accompany national efforts to implement the political agreement, in cooperation with key partners. He observed that the Peacebuilding Commission and the Peacebuilding Fund remained committed to accompanying Guinea to sustain its peacebuilding gains. The Secretary-General congratulated the President for his Government's remarkable efforts in the fight against the Ebola epidemic. He encouraged national authorities in Guinea to sustain efforts to maintain sufficient surveillance and response capacities to address an eventual resurgence of the outbreak. He added that the UN would continue working with Guinea on its long-term sustainable human development strategies. The Secretary-General commended President Condé for his efforts in the areas of Security Sector and Justice Reforms. He encouraged the President to further advance the fight against impunity, including by ensuring that the perpetrators of the crimes committed in Guinea in 2009 are prosecuted.
