SAN FRANCISCO, January 13, (THEWILL) – The Lagos State House of Assembly through its committee on health services has directed that the blood bank section of the Gbagada General Hospital be temporarily shut down.

The committee members, who were on visit to the hospital in the company of the officials of the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFEMAA), ordered the closure of the blood bank on the discovery of some unethical procedures during the inspection.

Segun Olulade, chairman of the committee, who lamented the unhealthy practice, authorised the immediate sealing off of the blood bank due to the anomaly of screened and unscreened blood muddled together.

Mabel Adjekughele, the executive secretary of HEFEMAA, had observed that the blood bank was in bad state, with screened and unscreened blood not separated while blood that tested positive was also muddled with that which tested negative.

The team, angered by this act of negligence, which poses danger to those who patronise the hospital, advised that the blood bank be sealed pending when the place would be put in order.

The committee later visited the Cardiac and Renal Centre in the Gbagada General Hospital, where Babatunde Olabode Green, the director of the centre, told the committee that some of the world-class medical equipment were not functioning, either due to improper installations or poor quality of installation.
