What: Capacity-Building Workshop on Gender Education

When: 14-16 December 2015

Who: International Centre for the Education of Girls and Women in Africa (AU/CIEFFA), specialized institution of the African Union

Where: African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Objectives: The objectives of the workshop are as follows:

Understand the impact that a learner's gender has on the construction of his/her knowledge

Outline student's constructions of gender influence and their social interactions with peers and adults/teachers

Identify equitable strategies that prepare teachers to be sensitive to issues of gender equity

Participants: The Capacity- building workshop will gather senior officials of Ministries in charge of Education from AU Member States involved in teacher training and curriculum development, as well as Regional Economic Communities (RECs)

Expected outcomes: The expected results from the participants are:

Enhanced understanding of the interplay of gender dynamics in the educational system Selection of the best equitable teaching strategies suited to their own contexts Review of their teaching and learning resources to become gender-sensitive

Background:

The International Centre for the Education of Girls and Women in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) is a specialized institution of the African Union since 2004, dealing with women and girls' education following Decision Assembly/AU/DEC.44 (III). One of its objectives is to build the operational capacities of Member States on girls and women's education issues.

The Centre works closely with AU Member States, civil society and international partners to implement its programmes and activities in collaboration with UN educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Mission of the AU/CIEFFA is in line with the vision of Agenda 2063 which outlines that the African woman will be fully empowered in all spheres, with equal social, political and economic rights and opportunities and enabled to fight against all forms of violence and discrimination.

Within this context, the Commission is convening a workshop on the clarification of gender and education.

Media representatives are invited to cover the opening ceremony from 9.00 am to 9.30 am on Monday 14th December 2015 and the closing on Wednesday 16th December 2015 from 3.00 pm to 3.30 pm.
