Didier Reynders meets with his Burundian counterpart Alain Nyamitwe

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders met yesterday with his Burundian counterpart Alain Nyamitwe. He expressed strong concern about the political and security situation in Burundi and called for calm. Minister Reynders stressed the importance of a de-escalation in the statements towards Belgium.

Regarding the conclusion of the consultations under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, he stressed the urgency to resolutely take the path of dialogue. He reiterated the availability of Belgium to constructively contribute to a dialogue. Belgium is concerned about the gunfire attacks of this morning in Bujumbura and urges all parties to exercise restraint. The embassy is in permanent contact with our compatriots and has called for caution.
