“Better connected smart grid, greater energy efficiency”

The organisers of the West African Power Industry Convention (WAPIC) in November in Lagos have announced that Huawei will return as the exclusive diamond sponsor for the event. Huawei is a well-known global information and telecommunication giant.

WAPIC is taking place at the Eko Hotel in Lagos from 24-25 November and has been endorsed by Nigeria’s Ministry of Power. During the 12th edition of this long running, regional conference and expo, WAPIC will once again gather government, utilities, consultants and investors to discuss the power sector’s challenges and successes, including local markets, capacity building and investment.

Better connected smart grid:
“Our slogan this year at WAPIC is ‘Better connected smart grid, greater energy efficiency’,says Shi Wei Liang, Vice President West African Region, Huawei Technologies Limited in Nigeria, “and this year Huawei will showcase how we help power utilities to reduce line losses, improve efficiency and achieve green, efficient smart grids.”

He adds: “in Nigeria, for example, Huawei and partners has a team of more than 100 experts and a service team with over 4000 people, we are able to enhance the energy efficiency in West Africa. One of these projects in Nigeria that Huawei is implementing will benefit 280,000 electricity consumers and power utilities themselves.”

“In fact,” he continues, “Huawei is focusing on all power sector projects in West Africa and has subsidiaries located in every country in West Africa.”

The Huawei Technologies Vice President West Africa says the company’s “smart grid technology enables global electricity operators to reduce the impact of power outages, improve grid management, and introduce renewable energy sources, with huge savings to the economy and environment. ICT supports the construction of smart grids.”

Huawei decided to return as diamond sponsor at WAPIC because “Huawei has participated in many exhibitions in West Africa and we think WAPIC is one of the most professional events, both on the customer level as the quantitative. The visitors also learned a lot from the meetings and the panel discussions.”

West African Power Industry Awards
The West African Power Industry Awards are up for grabs again this year in seven different categories, from Lifetime Achievement Award, Power Transaction of the Year toBest Renewable Energy Project, and the industry can nominate potential candidates, while a high-level industry panel of judges will decide on the final winners.

WAPIC expo
The WAPIC expo floor will showcase the latest technologies and services for the industry while the free technical workshop programme will offer practical solutions, lessons learnt from case studies and problem-solving mechanisms to assist power companies and utilities in improving their efficiency and productivity.

The West African Power Industry Convention is organised by Spintelligent, leading Cape Town-based trade exhibition and conference organiser, and the African office of Clarion Events Ltd, based in the UK. Other flagship power events by Spintelligent are African Utility Week in Cape Town and EAPIC in Nairobi.
