Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of the Republic of Gabon

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of the Republic of Gabon and Chairman of the Economic Community of Central African States.

They exchanged views on regional developments, including the ongoing crisis in the Central African Republic, the situation in Burkina Faso as well as the fight against Boko Haram. They also discussed the situation in Gabon. The Secretary-General underscored the need for dialogue between the Government and the opposition. He highlighted the importance of guaranteeing the freedom of assembly and expression ahead of the legislative and presidential elections in 2016. He encouraged all Gabonese to abide by the laws of the Republic. The Secretary-General and President Bongo Ondimba also discussed the sustainable development agenda, climate change and the migrant/refugee crisis.
