Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the conclusion of the negotiations on a Libyan peace agreement

By Germany - Federal Foreign Office

Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (22 September) on the conclusion of the negotiations on a Libyan peace agreement in Skhirat (Morocco): I am pleased that the negotiations on a peace agreement in Libya have now reached a successful conclusion. The negotiations in Skhirat in Morocco go to show that resolute diplomacy pays off: the intensive efforts of the Libyan conflict parties under the mediation of Bernadino León have borne fruit, as has the meeting of the Libyan delegates on 10 June 2015 in Berlin, mediated by Germany, at which the conflict parties sat around a table together for the first time.

It is now up to the two parliaments in Tobruk and Tripoli to pave the way for a government of national unity and thus a peaceful future for their country by adopting the agreement.

In light of the suffering of the Libyan people and the ramifications of the conflict on the entire region, it is incumbent on them to act swiftly.
