MINISTER DIRECTS NRC TO LOOK INTO CAUSE OF TRAIN MISHAP

The Minister of Transport, Alhaji Yusuf Suleman has directed the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to look into the cause of the train mishap that occurred on Saturday.

Suleman said this on Monday in Abuja while meeting with the chief executives of parastatal organisations under his ministry.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a train derailed in Kafanchan in Kaduna State on Saturday.

According to the minister, there was information that a train had derailed and he personally visited the scene of the accident to assess the extent of the damage and to meet with the local committee within that area.

“ I am happy to report that it was a cargo train therefore there was minimal loss of lives in that accident

“Unfortunately and sadly we lost a staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation , the assistant locomotive driver who died instantly .

“The local committee was quite helpful in rescuing the cargo, the area is accident prone, and there were litters of locomotive and train tankers that were involved in accidents years back, some in the sixties and the seventies“ he added.
