BACKGROUND: The African Union Commission Chairperson will be in Brazzaville on the 4th of September to witness the historic opening of the 11th edition of the African Games, alongside Congolese Head of State, President Denis Sassou Nguesso. These games are significant in the history of sport in Africa as this edition marks the 50th anniversary of the games. Back then there were 29 participating countries with 2,500 athletes but the games have grown and this year, 7000 athletes are expected to participate. Under its Agenda 2063 framework, the African Union recognizes sport and physical activity as an effective tool to attain social and economic integration as well as the continent's broader development goals.
