Chelsea have announced the sale of defender Filipe Luis to the club they bought him from – Atletico Madrid.

The Brazilian spent just one season at Stamford Bridge after joining the Blues for a fee in the region of £16m. Sky sources reported last week that Atletico are paying around £15m to bring him back.

Luis made his debut as a substitute in the 6-3 win against Everton last August and made his first start against Schalke in the Champions League before going on to win the Premier League and Capital One Cup.

The 29-year-old, who has agreed to rejoin Atletico on a four-year contract, tweeted: “Happy! Glad to be coming home and to be a new Atleti player.”

Atletico’s sporting director Jose Luis Perez, called Luis “one of the most talented wingers in the world”, adding: “He already knows our club and our way of playing so he will adapt quickly.”

Luis made 26 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, scoring one goal, in a Capital One Cup win at Derby.

Only nine of these games were starts in the Premier League as he struggled to displace Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back.

“We wish him all the best for the future,” a statement on Chelsea’s website read.

Luis spent four years with Atletico in his first spell at the club, where he won the La Liga title in the 2013/14 campaign.

He also played for Deportivo La Caruna for four years before making his move to the Vicente Calderon Stadium in 2010.

The Brazil international won his 18th cap at the recent Copa America in Chile where he featured in all his country's matches before they lost in a quarter-final penalty shoot-out to Paraguay in June.
