Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni has urged tertiary institutions in the country to emulate the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti by initiating endowment funds and scholarship schemes for brilliant students in their citadels of learning.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre, said in a statement on Thursday that Oni, who made this call while hosting the Vice-Chancellor and management staff of ABUAD, said the move would not only complement the scholarship schemes of the various state governments, but would promote the culture of excellence among students.

He said, 'I remember that during our days in the University of Ife in the mid-1970s, the university had a scholarship scheme for exceptional students. The scholarship schemes motivated tough competition among brilliant students in the university.

'Students who were already enjoying the scholarship scheme worked extra hard to remain in the scheme while others who were not on scholarship burnt the midnight oil to win it.'

The governor congratulated ABUAD's authorities for successfully launching the endowment fund, adding that the fund would open a flood gate of opportunities for brilliant but indigent students to have access to high quality education in the university.
