Governor Dickson Visits Family Of Late Human And Environmental Rights Advocate, Oronto Douglas, Says He Lived A Life Of Service

Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, accompanied by the Acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the State, Chief Serena Dokubo-Spiff, Senators-elect Ben Murray Bruce, Evangelist Foster Ogola and other senior citizens of the state, visited the family of environmental and human rights activist, Late Oronto Douglas in Abuja.

In his remarks during the visit, Governor Dickson, who extolled the enviable disposition of the deceased, explained that, he would have visited the family much earlier, but for the April 11 and the later rescheduled House of Assembly polls in the State last Saturday.

The Bayelsa Chief Executive, noted that, Late Oronto Douglas was during his brief, but eventful sojourn on earth, a dogged fighter, an enviromental activist of international repute and a firm believer and notable architect of the Ijaw struggle.

According him, the deceased lived a life of service and remained a committed and passionate advocate of issues related to the cleanliness, safety and the overall protection of the environment, especially in the Niger Delta right up to his last moments on earth, stressing that, even though, he died at the age of 49, he was an accomplished personality.

“Oronto lived a life of service and he was very committed and passionate about the issues of the environment. It is sad to note that, he died at the age of 49, but he was accomplished. He lived a fulfilled life and he left a legacy of service to humanity.

While praying God to grant the bereaved family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, he pointed out that, Bayelsa and Nigeria have lost a great son and a very good man, inview of his outstanding contributions to the development of the State and Country at various times.

“We pray that the family he left behind will have the fortitude to bear this great loss. Bayelsa has lost a great son and indeed, Nigeria as a whole has lost has a lost a very good man given his outstanding contributions to the development of this country.”
