Pope discourages new cardinals from flaunting power

Pope Francis said on Friday that the cardinalate should be seen as a vocation expressed in a dimension of service, rather than as a prize or the culmination of a career, in a letter to twenty archbishops who will be named cardinals on February 14. The pope encouraged the archbishops to celebrate becoming a cardinal “with humility”. “Make sure that in celebrating, you don’t let a spirit of worldliness creep in, which befuddles more than grappa on an empty stomach, disorienting and separating one from the cross of Christ,” he said.
