GROUPS BERATES AMAECHI OVER THREAT TO ARREST OGONI LEADER

Groups affiliated to one of the prominent ethnic organizations in the Niger Delta region, the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has berated Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for threatening to arrest MOSOP President, Goodluck Diigbo.

Governor Amaechi had, at an interactive session with the people of Ogoni recently, threatened to order the arrest of Diigbo, who is currently in the United States, saying that his activities posed serious security challenges to the state.

In an open letter to the governor, which was made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the state capital, the affiliated groups stated that Governor Amaechi was interfering in the affairs of MOSOP.

“We are surprised that as a sitting Governor of Rivers State, you had on Friday, November 27, 2009 at Bori threatened to arrest the President of MOSOP, Comrade Goodluck Diigbo”, the groups said.

The open letter, which was signed by Gboh Ebenezer Fege, President, National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP), Evangelist Gloria Yegenee, President, Federation of Ogoni Women Association (FOWA) and nine other leaders reminded Governor Amaechi that Diigbo founded seven, out of the 10 groups that make up MOSOP under the leadership of late Kenule Saro-Wiwa.

Insisting that the threat by the governor to arrest the MOSOP President was ill-motivated and uncalled for as he was democratically elected by the people of Ogoni and above all, had not committed any crime, the letter described Governor Amaechi's utterances as an insult on the collective intelligence of the people of Ogoni.

The affiliate groups demanded a public apology from the governor for the threat to arrest Diigbo, reminding him that no institution or government can impose a leadership on the people of Ogoni.#
