FG Sets Up 395 IT Centres in Rural Areas of Nigeria

The National Information Technology Development Agency(NITDA), the Federal Government agency empowered by law to develop and regulate Information Technology in Nigeria has set up 395 public access venues in rural areas of the country,providing service to 2 million users, the Chairman Governing Board of the Agency, Dr Tosin Ajayi, has disclosed.

Speaking at the commissioning of one of the Centres established at Orin Ekiti in Ekiti state and handing over the project to the State Government, the Chairman ,said the agency has set up 73 of such Centres in the South West with 9 in Ekiti state,since its inception as part of the Transformation agenda of the present administration, the purpose being to empower several of the citizens at the grassroots on the positive usage of Information Technology for the betterment of their living standards .

Speaking through the Member of the Governing Board and facilitator of the project ,Mr Segun Ilori,he said NITDA projects were geared towards ensuring that Nigerians take advantage of the Information Technology revolution to achieve a quantum leap in socio economic development and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).He called for closer collaboration between State Governments and NITDA to ensure sustainability of the Centres located in the state and further enhancing the deployment of ICT in more locations.

Also Speaking while commissioning the Rural Information Technology Centre, Orin Ekiti established by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) the Governor of Ekiti state Mr Ayodele Fayose noted that Information Technology has become the most important vehicle for social engineering and economic empowerment in this millennium.

The Governor who was represented by his Chief of Staff ( COS) Chief Dipo Anisulowo stated that the multiplier effect in the improvement of industrial and business processes and the impact on the society has been mind boggling and a revolution that has changed the world.He said the rural IT centres were capable of leading to improvement in the Economic development at the grassroots,saying that no sane society can afford to ignore the Information Technology revolution

" the Ekiti State Government has therefore invested huge resources in ICT because we have embraced ICT as a veritable tool for governance. Our Commitment has been demonstrated by the investment we have made in computerizing most of the institutions of delivering service to the people and revenue generation"

While commending the National Information Technology Development Agency NITDA for the initiative of establishing Access Venues in rural communities, the Governor expressed confidence that this initiative will lead to quantum leap in the penetration of IT among the rural populace and engaging several of our unemployed youths into gainful employment by exploring the world for opportunities that abound on the Internet.
