Bolton forward Max Clayton is out for the season after surgery to repair cruciate ligament damage.

Clayton was taken to hospital after he was injured during the first half of Saturday's Championship game against Ipswich.

Scans revealed damage to the anterior cruciate in Clayton's right knee, and a Bolton statement on Thursday ruled him out for the next six months.

That recovery period extends well beyond the end of the regular Championship season on May 2, when Wanderers are due to host Birmingham in their final game.

“We're all disappointed for Max,” Bolton manager Neil Lennon said. “He's a good kid and I'm sure he'll come back stronger.”

Clayton said: “Devastating news to be out for the rest of the season, but I will come back stronger than ever ready for the challenge of next season.”

The loss of Clayton could be offset by the arrival of Emile Heskey if Lennon decides to offer the former England striker a deal.

Heskey, 36, is still training with Bolton and will have a chance to impress his former Leicester team-mate when he plays for the club's U21 side on Monday.
