Mrs. Obiano tasks FIDA on Welfare of Women

By Emeka Ozumba

Wife of the governor of Anambra State chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano has tasked the Federation of International Women Lawyers (FIDA) Anambra state to be steadfast in their commitment to the welfare of women in the state especially widows and indigent women who need support of the privileged members of the public to live meaningfully. Mrs. Obiano made the call while receiving a delegation from FIDA, Anambra Chapter led by Barrister Mrs. Patricia Okafor at her office in the Government House Awka yesterday.

The governor's wife charged the FIDA delegation to lift the fortunes of indigent widows with their services as part of their contribution to the growth and development of the Anambra State and Nigeria. According to Mrs. Obiano, “I know about FIDA and the work you are doing in the area of free legal services but you need to task yourself a little more.” Buttressing her charge with her philosophy in life, Mrs. Obiano said “I don't normally give out anything that I cannot miss.” Let us try and alleviate the sufferings of those living below the national minimum wage and drastically drive poverty from our communities.

Mrs. Obiano told FIDA that their activities are similar to the programmes she is doing through her pet project the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) which has a vision to become a beacon of sustainable empowerment for women (widows & the indigent) and the less privileged. Mrs. Obiano revealed that since 1991 she committed herself to the course of the less privileged with the realization of the need to help in whatever way she could with ten percent of her earnings. As she put it, “we need to help, especially the physically challenged. They should not be treated as if they are worth nothing, less they turn round and become a problem to the society.” She thanked FIDA for the courtesy visit and assured them of readiness to collaborate.

Earlier Chairperson of FIDA Anambra State, Barrister Mrs. Patricia Okafor, told Mrs Obiano that they came to commend her for the noble initiatives through CAFÉ and pledge their support and readiness to work with her in uplifting the less privileged, and requested support of the governor's wife in sustaining their office accommodation in Awka. FIDA also commended Governor Willie Obiano for what they described as his giant strides in a few months in office and urged Mrs. Obiano to convey their appreciation.
