Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the parliamentary elections in Tunisia

By Germany - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

BERLIN, Germany, October 27, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement today (26 October) on the parliamentary elections held in Tunisia:

The parliamentary elections are a milestone on the path to a democratic Tunisia. The people in this country have proven that they have not let themselves be intimidated by terrorist threats in their fight for freedom and democracy following the courageous 2011 revolution for which so many gave their lives. I would like to congratulate all Tunisians for this and to say that I am personally very pleased about this success. With its parliamentary elections on Sunday, Tunisia has also sent a very important message: it is possible for a transition from autocracy to democracy to succeed in the Middle East. That is a very strong signal of hope, above all for people in the region who have endured great suffering in recent years. Germany has stood by Tunisia from the outset and will continue to do everything it can to support the country in the future.
