By Imo Initiative

It was indeed a heavy blow to the political life of the immediate past Pro-Chancellor, Imo state University, Mazi Clement Owunna, last week, at his Aro-Umulolo country home, Okigwe LGA, when his kinsmen, support groups including men, women and youth dumped his campaign platform and pledged their allegiance to the senatorial ambition of the Speaker, Imo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu for the Okigwe senate position in 2015.

The over 1,000 Aro people who defied the heavy downpour which was only witnessed in that section of the community to the consternation of everybody, while declaring total rejection to Mazi Owunna's senatorial candidacy through the burning of his campaign crested vests said that their action showed that “We have rejected the devil and all his works”.

Led by their leaders, including Rev. Steve the Great, Chief Sunny, Chief Sunday Osu and Mrs. Beatrice Obi, the people boldly told the Speaker that they invited him to inform him against the backdrop of media propaganda that their former leader (Mazi Owunna) left to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, only with some Governor's appointees from the area whom they described as members of the APGA/APC, who according to them misled their brother in the use of a purported zoning system to stage a political fight.

They explained that they could not have joined Mazi Owunna to APGA when it is obvious that Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, currently represents light in the present political scenario of Okigwe zone, adding that the unbeatable antecedents of the Imo Speaker, as well as his charismatic leadership style, as well as his system of politics devoid of bitterness attracted them to him.

They assured the Speaker that against all entreaties made by the Owunna group to buy them over, the people of the area have spoken with one voice in their resolve to support his ambition to represent the zone at the senate, pointing out that they strongly believe that his representation would bring good tidings to the people of the zone.

Earlier in an interview, the Okigwe LGA Secretary of the APC, Chief Okey Unam and the LGA coordinator of OPPM, Chief Patrick Mbanusi, told reporters that the Okigwe people have solemnly resolved to adopt Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu as their consensus candidate, having performed optimally as the Speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, as well as the political leader of the zone.

They maintained that the Speaker has facilitated immensely the ongoing transformation of the zone to enable it be at per with other zones in the state, while urging their son (Mazi Owunna) to focus greatly in building his business empire, as according to them, “there is a clear-cut difference between politics and business”.

The party chieftains in Okigwe area however, debunked speculations that there is a subsisting zoning system in the area, adding that the APC as a formidable political platform strongly believes in giving political powers to genuine contenders whom it considers as the heartbeat of the people to enable them bring back the desired results.

In their separate speeches, the Mayor of Okigwe zone, High Chief Tony Black Nduka and the member representing Okigwe state constituency at the state Assembly, Hon. Acho Ihim, commended the people for their wise decision and assured that they would not regret their actions.

They thanked the Speaker and the state government on the massive infrastructural drive being witnessed in the area and pledged the total support of the Okigwe people in his bid to represent them at the senate come 2015.

In his remarks, the member representing Okigwe North in the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Matthew Omegara, described the Speaker as an honest, tested and trusted leader who had effectively utilized his good offices to address the developmental challenges confronting the Okigwe people.

He added that Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, possesses the requisite administrative and political skills of further initiating and attracting changes in Okigwe zone and urged the people never to relent in their support.

Responding, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, who was overwhelmed by the mammoth crowd that thronged the arena, described the heavy down pour at the event as a lasting covenant between him and Okigwe people, assuring that if elected senator in next year's election, he would deploy the necessary resources at his disposal to turn around the fortunes of the people for better.

He expressed his earnest desire to ensure that the access road linking Arondizuogu and Onitsha in Anambra state and the task of creating an enabling environment, mostly for women and youths to be gainfully integrated into meaningful ventures to curb high rate of unemployment in the area, are given adequate attention to give the people a new lease of life.

Rt. Hon Uwajumogu, also used the forum to dismiss rumors making the rounds that he once mocked Okigwe people that the people of the area do not have the necessary resources to contest the 2015 senate position with him and described the rumor as a barefaced lies from the pit of hell.

While thanking them for their unflinching support and solidarity, the Speaker further described 2015 as a turning point for the people of the state, as according to him, it is a season designed for the people to chart a better course for their destiny.
