Special Envoy Djinnit praises Angola's pivotal role as Chair of ICGLR, expresses strong support for region's commitment to neutralize negative forces

LUANDA, Angola, September 11, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- UN Secretary General's Special Envoy Said Djinnit completed a two day visit in Luanda, Angola. The Special Envoy met with President Dos Santos as well as Ministers of External Relations and Defense. "Angola plays a pivotal role in the region as Chair of ICGLR, and key member of the SADC. I have come to seek the President's guidance and support and encourage him to vigorously pursue the efforts which he has so wisely and ably initiated to build consensus between countries of the region as they join forces to tackle key challenges", Djinnit said.

During his stay, Said Djinnit held fruitful talks with Angolan authorities focusing on progress in the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework, fast tracking of the Nairobi Declarations, neutralization of negative forces as well as recent developments in the region including Central African Republic and South Sudan. They agreed to collaborate closely and undertake joint good offices initiatives to help bring about stability and peace in the region.

"This region is at a crossroads. It can only realize its vast potential once sensitive security concerns are resolved and mutual trust is restored between neighboring countries and regional groupings. For this to happen, issues such as negative forces in particular FDLR must be collectively and definitively addressed," according to Mr. Djinnit.

In this regard, he reaffirmed his commitment to support the decisions of the regional leaders and extant Security Council resolutions.

SESG Djinnit pursues his inaugural regional tour and is expected to visit South Africa next.
