The AU and the UN resolved to further strengthen their cooperation in support of ongoing efforts at development and stability in the Great Lakes Region

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 27, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- As part of the initial tour he is undertaking in the region, Said Djinnit, the Special Envoy designate of the Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region visited Addis Ababa on 26-27 August. He met with Mrs.NkosazanaDlamini-Zuma the Chairperson of the African Union Commission with whom he discussed ways and means for further strengthening the cooperation between the AU and the UN in the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework which was adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the region on 24 February 2013. They discussed areas of cooperation as part of the joint efforts of the two Organisations in support of regional initiatives aimed at promoting lasting stability and development.

He also met with Mr. SmailChergui, the Commissioner for Peace and Security with whom he pursued the exchange of views on the situation in the region.

Earlier, he had a working session with Haile Menkerios the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to the African Union and Head of United Nations Office to the AU (UNOAU) to discuss coordination and cooperation among various UN entities in support of peace and development efforts in the region.
