Soldiers Turn Back Senator Abaribe Convoy Over Alleged Indiscipline
The convoy of the Senator representing Abia South zone at the National
Assembly, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe on Thursday, had a rough deal with
soldiers at the military checkpoint at Nsulu Games Village on the old Aba
— Umuahia highway.
Trouble started for the senator who serves as the spokesman of the senate
when his 5 -vehicle convoy which was on its way back from Umuahia, overran
the barricade set up at the checkpoint as a brand Toyota Sienna car with
the inscription, ˜Barr. Friday Nwosu Foundation™ has already gone halfway
through the second barricade leading to a gridlock with each party claiming
right of way.
Following the confusion, the driver of the branded car was said to have
insisted on not going back as the convoy of the senator which was far off
when he was already halfway through the barricade should have waited for
him but chose to block the road.
According to eyewitness accounts, the soldiers on duty who were visibly
angered at the unruly behavior of the senator and his convoy reprimanded
them and ordered the 5 vehicles in his convoy to turn back and make way for
the branded bus of the Barr. Friday Nwosu Foundation to drive through the
barricade.
The soldiers further rebuked the two MOPOL men in the senator convoy who
had already disembarked and threatened to deal with the driver of the
Sienna car if he fails to make way for the senator.
A source hinted that Abaribe who is now contesting for the Abia
governorship seat in 2015 was seated in one of the jeeps in the convoy, but
could not utter a word to the soldiers as he wound down his windscreen and
ordered the driver of the pilot security car to turn back.
The source further stated that the Barr. Friday Nwosu who is a governorship
aspirant was not in the Sienna car as at the time of the incident.
Said one of the eyewitnesses, Senator Abaribe convoy was clearly at
fault because the Sienna car had almost gone through the last barricade at
the checkpoint before the senator security vehicle which was coming from
the Umuahia end decided to block the road. I was on my way back from
Umuahia when the convoy overtook me and I later caught up with them at the
checkpoint only to witness the confusion. The convoy has already stopped to
allow the Sienna pass, but later started moving.
“May be, they did it because they recognized the oncoming car as that of
his opponent in the governorship race. I commend the soldiers for the way
they handled the situation.
