OGUN COMMISSIONER BECOMES VICE CHANCELLOR

The Ogun State Commissioner for Education and Technology, Segun Awonusi, was Monday named the new Vice-Chancellor of the Tai Solarin University (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode. Mr. Awonusi's appointment came barely 48 hours after suspected cultists killed a lecturer of the institution at Ilese Ijebu, Ogun State.

Gbenga Daniel, the state governor, announced the appointment following the recommendation of the governing council of the university, which nominated the professor of English Phonetics and Phonology at the University of Lagos as replacement for the pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Kayode Oyesiku, whose five years tenure ends on 31 March.

Mr. Awonusi attended Ilusin Grammar School, Ilusin, Ogun State, before moving to Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, and also the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, Stanford University, United States, and City University, London.

He holds a doctorate in English Language/ Linguistic with specialisation in phonetics from the University of London in 1985. He has over 50 publications in form of books, chapters in book, monographs and journal articles on a variety of subjects, including English pronunciation.

He has also served as external examiner and assessor to many universities in Nigeria, Ghana, United States of America (USA) and to professional bodies like the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chattered Institute of Bankers, and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
