Obiano Orders Probe of Onitsha Collapsed 4-storey Building

Anambra State government will set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the cause of the collapsed four-storey building under construction at Saint Christopher Anglican Church, Odoakpu Onitsha.

Governor Obiano who made this known when he visited the site of the incident in which at least four persons were reported dead also assured that the state government would set up a high quality laboratory for testing quality of building materials.

He lamented the loss of the deceased persons in the incident saying the Commission of Inquiry would equally evaluate the condition and standard of a nearby two storey building under construction building being handled by the same contractor (name withheld) to ensure that it does not constitute any threat to public lives.

According to him, a building material laboratory, the first of its kind in the South-East zone would be commissioned in the next two weeks.

He disclosed that the laboratory would be used to test the quality of all building materials and that every builder in the state would be compelled to subject their materials to the laboratory before use while the facility would also extend its services to markets to confirm that the quality of building materials offered for sale meet the specified standard.

Governor Obiano said this would help to check building collapses and called on builders in the country not to cut corners, warning that government would prosecute any builder that fails to meet the requirement specified by the regulatory body.
