Thailand's military leaders said Thursday the national constitution had been suspended, after seizing power in a coup they said was aimed at ending months of political turmoil.

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha (second right) announces the military coup in a televised address. 'In order to run the country smoothly, (coup leaders have) suspended the constitution of 2007, except for the chapter on the monarchy,' said a statement read out on national television.
