WORLD HORIZONS PRESS RELEASE: A response to terrorism in Nigeria
Rev. Keating travels to Abuja from USA to meet with families of missing girls
In response to a number of events perpetrated by terrorist groups, including the recent abduction of more than 200 girls from a school in the state of Born, Reverend Kristopher Keating, executive director at World Horizons, a Christian non-profit organization working in more than 30 countries, will be traveling to Borno State, Nigeria on May 7-16.
The purpose of this trip is to meet with and encourage members of the Nigerian community including government officials, faith leaders and the families of the missing girls. The primary focus of the trip is to pray with and stand in solidarity with those affected by this and other other acts of terrorism involving young children.
Says Rev. Keating, 'I have been compelled, by love, to act for the benefit of those young women who have been kidnapped. I see an urgent need to respond by standing in solidarity with the families of the missing women, while praying for their rescue and safe return. Our faith in Christ must produce love. In this case, love demands rescue. It is important to understand that this is not a new problem in Nigeria. Boko Haram has perpetrated unjust violence in the area for too long.'
We expect that this peaceful prayer and dialogue event will produce increased awareness and positive engagement toward the development of coordinated rescue plans for the missing girls. This response is not only about those kidnapped from Chibok last month but also the existence of terrorism that has prevailed for too long in surrounding regions.
On Sunday, May 11 there will be a peaceful event at Abuja City Church at 10am focused on prayer for the missing girls and their families. On Wednesday, May 14, Rev. Keating will be meeting with families and parents of the girls to stand alongside and pray with them for the release of their daughters.
