Governor T.A Orji Commends Abia A Poly, Increases Monthly Subvention

Chief Theodore Orji has lauded the Board and Management of the Abia State Polytechnic Aba for managing its resources prudently and remaining disciplined in its activities.

Governor Orji made the commendation when he received in audience the Abia State Polytechnic community led by the Chairman of the Institution's Governing Council, Rt. Hon Christopher Enweremadu on a thank you visit at the Government House, Umuahia.

The Abia State number one citizen said the institution has done very well in managing its resources, saying that the new buildings, laboratories and departments that spring up everywhere in the school attest to this.

He recalled that Abia Polytechnic hardly goes on strike as there is relative peace in the polytechnic and urged the school authorities to do more in terms of academic quality as his Government is ready to assist them when called upon.

Chief Orji stated that his Government is extremely interested in what happens in the school as the institution means a lot to the Government and reminded the institution that the essence of citing it in Aba is to provide Technical and Business Education, adding that he expects the polytechnic to produce the manpower that will feed industries in Aba and train businessmen.

He said that the Council members were carefully chosen because Government wants a change in the institution and charged them to maintain their integrity.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Governing Council of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, and Rt. Hon Christopher Enweremadu thanked the Governor for his fatherly disposition to the institution, and especially yielding to their plea to increase their monthly subvention from N25 to N90 million.

He appealed to the Governor to lend his support to the request to the Federal Government to take over the Polytechnic and for the establishment of a second campus of the polytechnic to be named Dame Patience Jonathan campus, Osisioma as well as a bail out from its huge debt profile nearing N2 billion.

Also commenting, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Sir Alwell Onukaogu thanked the Governor for the quality of leadership he has given the school in the Council and for helping the school attain great heights.

He disclosed that the school runs 7 programmes in the Department of Engineering, and made public that the School is the only Polytechnic in the country that did not join in the ongoing strike action by Polytechnics.

The Governor was later conferred with an award as the most worthy visitor to Abia State Polytechnic for his landmark achievements toward the development of education.
