Sleeping policeman shoots politician dead in Kwara

By The Citizen

Tragedy struck at a hotel in Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State about 11.15pm on Friday when a policeman,  Yunus Muideen, allegedly shot dead, a  popular politician in the LGA, Femi Awoyale.

Awoyale was said to be a former Irepodun LG chairmanship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party. The tragedy was said to have resulted into pandemonium as youths of Oro town were said to have  protested when they heard of Awoyale's

death. Our correspondent who visited the area with other journalists on Saturday however observed the presence of  anti-riot policemen and soldiers who had been deployed to the town to restore law and order.

An eye witness who pleaded anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to journalists on the matter, on Saturday said  the management of the hotel had invited policemen to ensure security of lives and property

at the hotel for Valentine fun seekers. He added that about 11.15pm on Friday, Muideen, a corporal,  who was said to have been sleeping after allegedly  being drunk, was woken up by noise from the vicinity.

It was learnt that the cop suspecting that the noise was from trouble makers shot twice in the air apparently to scare the suspected

hooligans. The source added that after the noise had stopped, Muideen who is a corporal was about to take another nap when he suddenly hit his gun against the wall.

It was gathered that after the gun had hit the wall, bullets were discharged from the gun.  One of the bullets was said to have hit

Awoyale on the chest; who subsequently fell down and died before he could be treated.
