GENEVA, Switzerland, February 12, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Flavia Pansieri will visit Togo from 17 to 20 February 2014.

This is the first visit by a high-level official from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) since the OHCHR established an office in the country in 2006. The visit is in response to an invitation by the Government of Togo sent in June 2012. Pansieri's visit aims to strengthen the partnership between OHCHR and the Government, civil society, human rights defenders, and the UN Country Team, and to ensure that human rights are given a central role in the programmes and activities developed by the Government, the UN and other groups.

During her visit, Pansieri will meet members of the Togolese Government and the Judiciary. She will also meet with the President of the National Assembly, as well as with the President of the National Human Rights Commission, representatives of civil society, and UN agencies.

The Deputy High Commissioner's agenda includes a visit to Sokodé, a town located some 380 km from the capital Lomé, where she will inaugurate the Information and Documentation Centre on Peace and Human Rights, which aims to improve access to information on human rights.

During her mission, Pansieri will also discuss the Government's cooperation with human rights mechanisms.

Flavia Pansieri will hold a news conference at the OHCHR Office in Lomé (83, rue de la Pâture, Quartier SUPER TACO) at 15:45 local time on Thursday 20 February 2014.
