Confab: Crisis Erupt In Ohanaeze Over Imposition Of Delegates

By Isaacs Iwunze

FRESH crisis has erupted in Ohanaeze Ndigbo following the protest by the women wing of the apex umbrella of Igbo socio-cultural association over the alleged imposition of delegates to the proposed national conference.

Leader of Igbo women Assembly and former president of Council of Women societies in Enugu State, Chief Mrs Maria Okwor, who briefed newsmen yesterday, alleged that the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Chief Garry Igarawey as President-General and Dr Joe Nwogu as Secretary have both planned to plant stooges as delegates that would represent Igbo women at the conference.

While substantiating her claims, she cited that prominent women members of Imeobi Ohanaeze, including herself were excluded in meeting of women summoned by the duo of Igarawey and Nwogu at the Ohanaeze secretariat, last Monday.

She therefore vowed that Igbo women would be mobilised for a protest against the selection by the Ohanaeze chieftains if their conspiracy comes to fruition.

Mrs Okwor further alleged that Ohanaeze women group had already elected their leaders which she said the Ohanaeze men leaders have failed to recognise.

She noted that it was because of the leadership crisis in Ohanaeze Ndigbo that Professor Ben Nwabueze-led Igbo Leaders of Thought comprises eminent persons in Igbo land to articulate items of discussion at the proposed conference, adding that Igbo women supports the position of the Nwabueze group.

Okwor suggested that the governors of the South East should be involved in appointing delegates for the conference.
