UN committed to human trafficking eradication

By The Citizen

The UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children, Dr Joy  Ezeilo, has reiterated the world body's commitment to eradicating human trafficking across the globe.

Ezeilo said in Enugu on Friday that the body had mapped out strategies to tackle the menace, especially in Africa.

The rapporteur said she had just concluded an advocacy visit to President James Michel of Seychelles on the issue.

She said the advocacy would also take her to some other African countries to discuss ways of combating human trafficking on the continent.

According to her, the Seychelles president discussed some mechanisms put in place by the country to stop the crime and other human rights abuse.

“l will  study the situation in the country and other parts of Africa and later present my  observations and findings to the UN Human Rights Council in June,'' She said.

The rapporteur appealed to African governments to strengthen relevant institutions as part of their contribution to the global fight against human trafficking.

She also commended Michel for ‘showing strong leadership’ for combating and preventing human trafficking.
