Members of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday took over the streets of Onitsha and its environs in protest against what they termed as continued detention of their leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike.

The demonstration which lasted for five hours, beginning from 9 a.m., saw the demonstrators in MASSOB attires chanting anti-government songs as 'Federal Government should release our leader,' 'We no longer belong to Nigerian terrorist nation,' 'Our patience is running out', among others.

Moving in motor and motorcycle the demonstrators started their journey from Owerri road by Obosi bye-pass to Obosi and Nkpor Junction but on their way to Awka, a detachment of soldiers from the 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha blocked them and they had to retreat towards Onitsha main market, through the Old Market Road.

The demonstration, however, created tension in the commercial city as all the security agencies, including the police and SSS trailed them protests to ensure that no life and property were lost in the process.
