Everton Can Resist Barkleys Bids

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is convinced the club's strong financial position means they can resist bids for midfielder Ross Barkley in January.

Barkley, 20, has been linked with a £50m move to Manchester United.

When asked if he was confident the Toffees could spurn approaches from other clubs, Martinez, 40, said: "Yes.

Absolutely.
There is not even a doubt.
" Barkley has excelled this term, scoring three goals for Everton and winning three caps for England.

He has played in all but one of Everton's 19 Premier League fixtures this season, striking a memorable late winner at Swansea on 22 December with a stunning free-kick.

Ex-Toffees boss David Moyes brought Marouane Fellaini with him to Old Trafford in the summer and continues to be linked with renewed bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines.

But Martinez insists Barkley - whose displays have drawn comparison to former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne - will not be going anywhere when the transfer window re-opens next month.

"He has a long-term contract and the first half of the season has been a real joy to see him grow and the second half of the season will be even better," the Spaniard said.

"We are in a strong position financially.
When you have to bring in money then it can be a real difficult position as you can be anxious and frustrated.

"The stability we have from a financial point of view allows us to make football decisions and this January window is important for us to make sure we kick on and finish stronger than we started.

" Everton are currently fourth in the top flight, three points and two places ahead of Manchester United.

Martinez's side travel to play Stoke on 1 January.
