17 Bodies have been recovered from the boxing day boat mishap which took place at River Buruku, in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State and claimed 40 human lives.

Addressing the Press on Saturday, Daniel Ezeala, Benue state Police command Public Relations Officer, said “We have so far recovered 17 bodies from the river but we are still continuing with the search and rescue operation until we are convinced that there are no survivors or bodies in the river.

“I can also assure you that we have commenced investigations into the matter with a view to finding the immediate and remote causes of the tragedy.

Families and friends of the victims are calling on the federal government to construct a bridge across River Buruku. The bridge is to help avoid future accidents on the river as water transport in Nigeria remains the most risky means of transportation.
