It was with great pain and distress that the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association learnt of the demise of the former Director-General of the Centre for Democratic Studies, Prof. Omo Omoruyi, who was reported to have died in a private hospital in Benin City in the early hours of today, after a long fought courageous battle with prostate cancer.

The Nigerian Medical Association deeply condoles the entire Omo Omoruyi family and the Government and People of Edo State, over the irreparable loss of the foremost Professor of Political science.

The NMA is appreciative of the fact that not only did Prof. Omo Omoruyi leave behind indelible footprints in the sands of time; he showed uncommon courage in his inspirational struggle against prostate cancer. We note the fact that till his death he was resolute in his determination to demystify the dreaded prostate cancer which is currently the leading cancer afflicting men.

The circumstances surrounding Prof. Omo Omoruyi's death once again reinforces the NMA's call on Nigerians and governments at all levels to collaborate with the Association in the aggressive pursuit of her ''HEALTHY LIVING AND REGULAR HEALTH CHECK-UP CAMPAIGN''. We also use this period to remind Nigerians to cultivate the right habit of regularly consulting their licensed and duly registered medical doctor/dentist for periodic health check-ups in view of its benefits, which includes prevention and early detection of all forms of cancers and sudden deaths amongst Nigeria's male and female populations. The NMA equally calls on the Federal and State Governments to join the league of countries and governments currently involved in the active search for more effective and permanent solutions to the dreaded scourge of cancer. This they can do by investing more resources into researches aimed at producing a cure for advanced stages of prostate cancer and other forms of cancer.

In line with the foregoing, we heartily note the declared resolve of the Comrade Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole CON, to consider for implementation the suggestion by the NMA for the Edo State Government to set aside a separate day for free health check-up for citizens of the state. In furtherance of this resolve by the Edo State Government and particularly as a way of immortalising the legacies of Prof. Omo Omoruyi, a great son of Edo State, the NMA calls on the Comrade Governor and the Edo State Government to name the free health check-up day ''Prof.Omo Omoruyi free health check-up day''.

We equally call on other State Governments to institute similar free health check-up day for citizens of their respective states, at least once a year, and laced with some incentives to encourage them to buy into the project.

We pray God to comfort and strengthen the Omo Omoruyi family, the Government and people of Edo State, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR and the entire people of Nigeria during this period of mourning.

May God grant the soul of late Prof. Omo Omoruyi eternal and peaceful rest.
