Towards an initiative by the European Union for responsibility in the supply of minerals from high risk conflict areas.

By European network for Central Africa (EurAc)

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, November 8, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Those who took part in the mission warmly invite you to a post-mission debriefing session at the European Parliament on 12nd November 2013.

(Registration from 15:00 at Spinelli Building, entrance from Luxembourg Place).

This meeting will provide an opportunity to hear the impressions and to share the lessons learned by the participants during their visit. This mission provided an opportunity for European parliamentarians to consult a number of key people in government, the churches, business, civil society, small scale miners etc. at Kigali, Goma, Bukavu and Bujumbura as well as visiting mining locations in Kivu.

The European Union is expected in the near future to propose a legislative initiative on the responsible supply of minerals from high risk conflict areas.

One of the main challenges which emerged is the need to take account of how this future European initiative will be applied. If it fails to address the realities and the needs on the ground it will have no positive impact. For this reason it is crucially important to be thoroughly well informed about the complexity of the situation at local and regional level.
